Eunice Tietjens was an American writer, lecturer, magazine editor and journalist. Her literary output was prolific, with at least four volumes of poetry alongside novels and children’s stories seeing publication.
She was born Eunice Strong Hammond on the 29th July 1884 in Chicago, the daughter of an artist. Her education was provided at various establishments in Europe and this will have given her a taste for travel. Throughout her lifetime she lived all over the world – in America, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. She was in France during the First World War, working as a war correspondent for the Chicago Daily News. Her poetry had already found a place in a magazine called
and she impressed the owner – Harriet Monroe – sufficiently to be offered an editorial position on that publication. This lasted for some twenty five years. The two women had a close friendship, both personal and professional, and Miss Monroe later described her friend as follows:

Scope and Content of the Collection
The Eunice Tietjens papers - Additions consists of a few pieces of incoming correspondence, including one letter and one poem from Edgar Lee Masters and two letters from Sara Teasdale, a small number of mementos and miscellaneous items and several boxes of Tietjens' work, both manuscript and published, as well as material relating to Tietjens' forebears, the Hammonds and the Strongs, her daughter, Janet Tietjens Head, and her first husband, Paul Tietjens. There are three boxes of photographs of Eunice Tietjens and her family, including her mother, Idea Hammond, her sisters Elizabeth and Louise, her brother Laurens, and her daughter Janet, as well as a number of images of well-known people such as Robert Frost, Vachel Lindsay, Edgar Lee Masters, Harriet Monroe and Mark Twain.

Scope and Content of the Collection
Much of the collection consists of correspondence, primarily incoming from family, friends, and literary figures. There are also numerous manuscript copies of her works, personal memorabilia, drawings, notes for lectures and articles, notebooks of poems, diaries, clippings, photographs and other miscellaneous material.
A second Tietjens collection titled "Additions," received in 1990 from Tietjens' granddaughter Jennifer Hart Dougall, is separately described and cataloged.
