Yi Mun-yol (born May 18, 1948) is a South Korean writer. Yi's given name at birth was Yol; the character, Mun (which translates as "writer"), was added after he took up a writing career.[1][2] His works include novels, short stories and Korean adaptations of classic Chinese novels[1][3] as well as political and social commentaries.[citation needed] An informal count has estimated that over 30 million copies of his books have been sold[4] and, as of 2021, they have been translated into 21 languages.[5] His works have garnered many literary awards[6] and many have been adapted for film and television.[4]

Yi Mun-yol was born in Seoul in 1948, but his father defected to North Korea during the Korean War, leaving his family in the South, where they had to endure years of suspicion and stigma. After much torment, struggle and poverty, he was able to enter Seoul National University. He made his literary debut in 1979 when his novellaSaehagok was one of the winners of the New Spring Literary Contest sponsored by the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper. A prolific author, Yi Mun-yol has published a number of outstanding novels including Son of Man (the first chapter of which appears above), The Poet, For the Emperor, and the novellas Garudaand Our Twisted Hero. Since 1999 he has served as the head of the Buak Literary Center, a residential program for budding writers.

Yi was born in Cheongun-dong in Seoul and attended prestigious Seoul National University, studying Korean Literature. He dropped out in 1970. From 1994 to 1997, he taught Korean language and literature at Sejong University. Since 1999, he has served as the head of Buak Literary Center. In 1999, he was awarded the Ho-Am Prize in the Arts. Yi iwas also a visiting scholar at the Korea Institute, Harvard University.
The author of over thirty best-selling books including Song of the Front,Our Twisted Hero, The Poet, and An Appointment with My Brother, his early life was marred by discrimination after his father defected to the North during the Korean War. The main theme in his writing is the abuse of political power and its affect on the morality and consciousness of the Korean people, often drawing from his extensive autobiographical materials.
He last published Frontier Between Two Empires in 1998.
