Marta Spendowska channels color, line and texture in watercolor. She is a Polish, US-based illustrator, a licensed surface pattern designer and web designer working in the United States under her name for Illustration and PolishLab for web design.

A self-taught artist, she comes from a creative family, but never imagined living as a professional artist full time. So she dropped this dream in her teens.

She attended a few universities, studying Journalism and eventually graduating with a Masters in Management and Marketing in Poland. After working in a dead-end job, she decided to leave her life behind and hop on a plane to the US.  Having experienced America while completing an internship in Atlanta, Georgia her senior year at University, she knew it was the place to follow her dreams.

“I sold my first painting in Atlanta (GA), sitting on the pavement, across from the Whole Foods. That was the moment when I realized how possible it might be to pursue my life as an artist in the US.”

Marta Spendowska

Born in Poland and based in Seacoast of New Hampshire, Marta Spendowska never sets out to simply paint a picture. Her aim is to interpret the subject in an interesting way that meets her client’s brief. She works quickly and expressively, creating unique work for fashion, beauty, food, publishers, interior and lifestyle companies, and more.

When Marta arrived in the US for an internship in Atlanta, she sold her first painting on the sidewalk for $20 and soon set herself the goal of becoming a professional illustrator. Today she’s one of the most experienced watercolour artists around, with a distinctive, impactful style and her own range of pillows, scarves, clutches, and tops under the Verymarta brand.

Approach

For Marta, the paint does the work, she simply manages it, and she loves how watercolours bleed and blend into both the paper and one another. She’ll often include little touches with pencils, crayons, or a brush, adding graphic elements, lines, or some rough shapes to round off a composition.
