Rana Mitter is ST Lee Chair in US-Asia Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is the author of several books, including Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II (2013) which won the 2014 RUSI/Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature, and was named a Book of the Year in the Financial Times and Economist. His latest book is China’s Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism (Harvard, 2020). His writing on contemporary China has appeared recently in Foreign Affairs, the Harvard Business Review, The Spectator, The Critic, and The Guardian. He has commented regularly on China in media and forums around the world, including at the World Economic Forum at Davos. His recent documentary on contemporary Chinese politics "Meanwhile in Beijing" is available on BBC Sounds. He is co-author, with Sophia Gaston, of the report “Conceptualizing a UK-China Engagement Strategy” (British Foreign Policy Group, 2020). Communist authorities suppress "feminine aesthetics and unhealthy content"
China's electronic media regulatory agency wants to ban "feminine" aesthetics and "vulgar influences" in entertainment programs.
It is part of a tightening of rules for programs described as "unhealthy content".
The National Radio and Television Authority (NRTA) has stated that political and moral behavior should be included as criteria in selecting people to appear on programmes.
Certain talent competition show formats have also been halted.
It's about increasing control over content, from games to music and film - censoring what is said to offend and violate "socialist values" - to fighting high star fees and tax evasion in the industry.
The authorities announced that they would promote what they defined as more masculine images of men and criticized celebrities who use a lot of make-up.
It was announced that programs that promote traditional, revolutionary or "advanced socialist" culture or promote patriotic feelings should be encouraged.

British historian and political scientist
Rana Shantashil Rajyeswar MitterOBE FBA (born 11 August 1969) is a British historian and political scientist of Indian descent who specialises in the History of the People's Republic of China. He is ST Lee Chair in US-Asia Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School.[1]
Early life and education
Mitter, of Indian Bengali heritage,[2] was born in Cambridge[3] and grew up on the south coast of England, near Brighton.[4] His parents were both academics; his father, Partha Mitter, taught art history at the University of Sussex and his mother, Swasti Mitter, was a professor at the University of Brighton.[5] Mitter was educated at Lancing College and King's College, Cambridge, where he received both his undergraduate MA and PhD; in 1991 he was elected President of the Cambridge Union. He was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University.
