Cui Tiankai (Chinese: 崔天凯; pinyin: Cuī Tiānkǎi; born October 1952) is a Chinese diplomat and was the longest-serving ChineseAmbassador to the United States, a role he filled from April 2013[1] to June 2021.

Early life and education

In 1952, Cui was born in Shanghai, China. He is a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China.[2]

Cui went to Shanghai Foreign Language School and graduated from the School of Foreign Languages of East China Normal University. Following his graduation from East China Normal University, Cui studied interpretation at the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

Career

Following his studies in Beijing, Cui traveled with a Chinese delegation to the United Nations to work as an interpreter in the General Assembly. After working in the UN for five years, Cui returned to academia to pursue a postgraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.[3]

New China ambassador heads to US, sources say

China’s yet-to-be-announced new ambassador to the US, Qin Gang (秦剛), yesterday headed to Washington, people familiar with the matter said.

Qin left a day after rare high-level talks in Tianjin, China, between US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and senior Chinese diplomats ended with the sides reiterating existing positions and no specific outcomes reached.

US President Joe Biden’s administration has maintained pressure on China in a stance that enjoys bipartisan support, but threatens to deepen mistrust.

Qin, 55, is to replace Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai (崔天凱), who at 68 has passed the retirement age for senior Chinese ambassadors, the sources said.

When Cui ended his eight years in Washington last month, he was China’s longest-serving ambassador to the US.

Qin, who is one of China’s vice foreign ministers and whose past portfolios have included European affairs and protocol, has no prior US-related experience, his biography on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affair

Cui Tiankaichiń. upr. 崔天凯 (ur. w październiku1952, Zhejiang) – chiński dyplomata, wiceminister spraw zagranicznych Chińskiej Republiki Ludowej.

Uczęszczał do East China Normal University, School of Foreign Languages w Szanghaju oraz Beijing Foreign Studies University w Pekinie.

W 1981 r. rozpoczął swoją karierę od pracy tłumacza przy ONZ w Nowym Jorku.

W 1984 został trzecim sekretarzem w Departamencie Organizacji Międzynarodowych i Konferencji chińskiego MSZ.

W 1986 przebywał na stypendium na Johns Hopkins University.

W 2006 został doradcą ministra spraw zagranicznych, a od 2007 był ambasadorem chińskim w Tokio. Pełnił tę funkcję do stycznia 2010. W latach 2010–2013 wiceminister spraw zagranicznych. Od 2013 jest ambasadorem ChRL w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
