Alex English
By John Mossman, Associated Press
Alex English is the all-time leading scorer for the Denver Nuggets, retiring as the No. 7 scorer in NBA history with 25,613 points, and he is the only player in league history to score 2,000 points in eight consecutive seasons.
English came out of South Carolina and began his pro career with the Milwaukee Bucks, then moved to the Indiana Pacers before being traded to Denver, along with a first-round draft pick, for George McGinnis in February 1980.
Pro basketball has rarely witnessed a more consistent scorer than English. In fact, he was the highest scoring player in the decade of the 1980s. Not one player—including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan—scored more points than English in that decade.
He owed it all to a silky-smooth jump shot and durability that belied his angular body. In his 15-year NBA career, he suited up for all but 14 games of the 1,230 for which he was eligible. Alexander "Alex" English
Alex English was one of the most respected, well-rounded, and dominant players in the game during the 1980s. He was a coach's dream - confident and quiet, coachable and prepared, and always ready to play. An offensive force with unmatched shooting and driving skills, English was a prolific scorer. Smooth, efficient, and graceful, he was the first player in NBA history to score 2,000 points in eight straight seasons. He set 31 Denver Nuggets all-time records in a ten-year stretch. The Nuggets fast-paced offense played to his strengths and when needed, English possessed an offensive repertoire that helped him create his own shot and fill up the basket with ease. Playing for Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire at South Carolina, English ranked first in scoring and third in rebounding when he graduated. English was the only player in school history to start every game, score 1,000 points, and grab 1,000 rebounds.

Her son has earned fame, not only as a basketball player, but also as an actor and a humanitarian. Born in Columbia on January 8, 1954, English spent the first few years of his life living with his grandmother. She was a laundry presser who, at times, took care of a many as 11 of her 13 grandchildren. Alex attended Hand Junior High School and Dreher High School. English was a starter in 78 high school basketball games and averaged 31 points per game in his junior year. More than 100 colleges recruited him, but he decided to attend the University of South Carolina. He holds the career scoring record of 1,972 points for the University of South Carolina basketball team. He was named an Independent All-American several times. After graduating from Carolina in 1976 Alex was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1976 and spent two years with the club, eventually becoming their all-time leading scorer. During his
