She debuted as a hidden unlockable character in the PlayStation version of the fighting gameDead or Alive in 1998, and has appeared in all of its sequels where she served as the protagonist of Dead or Alive 3, and has appeared in all of the series' spin-offs. Ayane is a character in two series created by Tecmo's Team Ninja: Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. She makes an appearance in Fatal Frame V as the player character in a side mission, and is voiced by Wakana Yamazaki.
A kunoichi of the Hajinmon sect of Mugen Tenshin-ryu, Ayane meets a girl named Tsumugi Katashina, who has attempted suicide. Sensing a similarity between them, she gives Tsumugi a special bracelet, the same as one Ayane herself wears. When Tsumugi goes to Mount Hikami, Ayane follows her, using the "purple thread" that connects their two bracelets to track her. Ayane enters Mikomori Hot Springs, but is unprepared to battle non-corporeal enemies, and barely escapes with her life.
