The deep Worcester roots of Bob Kraft's fortune

Growing up in Worcester, I spent time on Woodhaven Lane. That’s where Jacob Hiatt, father of Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s late wife, Myra, lived.

When I read in the Telegram & Gazette about Mr. Kraft’s visit to Worcester to dedicate a bridge in honor of Mrs. Kraft, it brought back memories of walking on Woodhaven Lane and looking in the direction of the Mr. Hiatt’s home – which I remember as being behind a stone gate and a deep forest.

Like that forest, the company that formed the basis of Mr. Kraft’s fortune has deep Worcester roots.

Before getting into that history, Mr. Kraft announced Dec. 8 he was giving $100,000 each to Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Worcester Technical High School. That day, he dedicated a foot bridge at Elm Park, near the former Salisbury Gardens apartments where I spent the first six months of my life, to his late wife.

Her father, Jacob Hiatt, was quite the American success story.

Jacob was born on December 3rd, 1997. Our only little boy after having two daughters. We were so excited and scared as he was early and not breathing well, but he surprised us with his fighting spirit. That fighting spirit would remain his whole shortened life on this earth before returning to his Father in Heaven on March 20, 2015.

Jacob was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy around 18 months old on a warm August morning. He may not have been strong in body but he was strong with his love for life. He amazed us with the way he looked at life and his innocence gave us such a blessed perspective on the world. He loved school and his friends. He loved x-box and hunting. He was able to spend time with his Dad and Uncle Dale on the loved family farm to hunt. And it still was the only place he ever slept an entire night. He loved spending time with his close friends the Bradfords watching football as a whole hearted Dolphins fan, even if Uncle Scott was a Chiefs fan. Lithuanian-American philanthropist (1908–2001)

Jacob "Jack" Hiatt (July 1, 1908 – February 25, 2001)[1][2] was a Lithuanian-American businessman and philanthropist.

Early life

Hiatt was born to a Jewish family in the Russian Empire in 1908, the son of Joshua and Leah Hiatt.[3][4] He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Lithuania and became a district attorney and circuit judge.[4][5]

In 1935 he immigrated to the United States, settling in Worcester, Massachusetts, where two of his brothers, Alexander and Sidney, lived.[3] Although he was fluent in Lithuanian, Hebrew, Russian, and German, Hiatt did not speak English when he arrived in the U.S.[4] Frances Lavine, the secretary to the Worcester superintendent of schools, helped find him a school that taught English to immigrants.[4][6] They married in 1937. In 1946 he earned a master's degree from Clark University.[3]
