Maurice Greene (12 August 1696 – 1 December 1755) was an English composer and organist.
Biography and Works
Born in London, the son of a clergyman, Greene became a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral under Jeremiah Clarke and Charles King. He studied the organ under Richard Brind, and after Brind died, Greene became organist at St Paul's.
With the death of William Croft in 1727, Greene became organist at the Chapel Royal, and in 1730 he became Professor of Music at Cambridge University.[1] In 1735 he was appointed Master of the King's Musick. At his death, Greene was working on the compilation Cathedral Music, which his student and successor as Master of the King's Musick, William Boyce, was to complete. Many items from that collection are still used in Anglican services today.
He wrote very competent music in the style prevalent in Georgian England, particularly longer Verse Anthems. His acknowledged masterpiece, Lord, Let Me Know Mine End, is a representative example. In it, Greene sets a te

Maurice Greene was a sprinter who was considered the fastest man in the world at his career peak from 1997-2004. In addition to his 2000 Olympic gold medals in the 100 and 4x100 relay, he was World Champion in the 100 metres in 1997, 1999, and 2001, winning the sprint triple of the 100, 200, and 4x100 relay in 1999. He also won the 100 metres at the 1998 Goodwill Games and the 1999 World Indoor Championship at 60 metres.
Greene attended Kansas Community College and the University of Kansas, but he turned pro early. He was USA Champion at 100 metres in 1997 and 2002, 200 metres in 1999, and the indoor 60 metres in 2001.
At major internationals Greene was dominant during his prime, winning the Golden Gala meet at 100 metres in 1999-2002, the Ivo Van Damme Invitational in 1998 and 2000, and the Zürich Weltklasse in 1999-2000. Greene was ranked in the world top 10 from 1997-2004, earning the #1 ranking for five consecutive years, 1998-2002.

Rare among US athletes, he never ran at college (10.43/21.00 as junior in 93) but made spectacular progress in 95, from 10.20w in 94 to 9.88w. He placed 2nd behind Michael Marsh in 95 US Champs. He tied world indoor 60 record of 6.41 in 98 and 2 days later ran 6.39. He equaled Donovan Bailey’s world indoor 50 record of 5.56 in 99. He moved from Kansas to train with John Smith in Los Angeles in September 1996. IN 1997 he clocked 9.90 to win the US Champs and twice in Athens before 9.86 to win the World title.
