Peter is the eldest of the six children of Frederick and Mary Jenkins.

Graduated from Greenwich High School in 1969.

Attended Woodstock in summer of 1969.

Graduated from Alfred University in 1973 with a BFA, majoring in Sculptor/ Ceramics.
Began his Walk Across America on October 15, 1973 in Alfred, New York. It ended in mid-January of 1979 in Florence, Oregon.

Peter George James Jenkins (11 May 1934 – 27 May 1992) was a British journalist and Associate Editor of The Independent. During his career he wrote regular columns for The Guardian, The Sunday Times as well as The Independent.

Biography

Jenkins grew up in Suffolk and was the son of a pharmaceutical chemist.^[1] He was educated at Culford School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he took a BA in history. He later attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison on a Harkness Fellowship, where he was a socialist activist.^[2] He performed his National Service in the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean fleet.^[1] He began his career as a journalist with the

Peter Jenkins (born August 7, 1951) is an American travel author known for walking from New York to Oregon between October 1973 and January 1979 while writing a bestselling book, A Walk Across America.

Early life and education

Jenkins is a graduate of Alfred University, with a BFA in Sculpture/Ceramics (1973), as well as an honorarydoctorate (2003). Jenkins first married at age 19, but by the time he graduated from college in 1973, he and his wife had separated.^[1]

Jenkins began his walk across America in Alfred, New York in October 1973. He was accompanied by his dog, Cooper, a half Alaskan malamute that died in an accident with a water truck at The Farm in Tennessee.
