Nation's acclaimed African American orchestra makes National Debut

Eighty-five members strong and founded by celebrated artistic director Darin Atwater, the nation's premiere African American orchestra makes its national television debut.

Recorded at MPT studios in high definition, Soulful Symphony with Darin Atwater, one of Maryland's most unique musical treasures, will perform genre-crossing, original compositions—told in musical styles ranging from gospel to jazz to symphonic.

Atwater Makes History as Only the Third Artistic Director in the Organization’s History

and the First African American to Hold the Position

Monterey, CA (September 7, 2023) – The Monterey Jazz Festival, the world’s longest continuously-running jazz festival announced today that composer and musician Darin Atwater is the next Artistic Director. Atwater succeeds Tim Jackson, who announced earlier this year that he was stepping down from his post after a brilliant 32-year run. Monterey Jazz Festival conducted an extensive international search and produced a diverse group of exceptionally talented candidates for consideration.

An artistic force in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Darin Atwater's career has encompassed the roles of composer, conductor, pianist, record producer, artist, arranger, film composer, vocalist, entrepreneur, educator, and arts advocate.

As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has blended American pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, gospel music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performance, radio and television - literally reinventing the symphony orchestra in America.

In 2023 Darin was named Artistic Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival; he is only the third person to hold the position in the festival’s 65-year history. The 2024 Festival will be his first as Artistic Director.
