Abraham Lincoln Lewis, known as A.L. Lewis, was born in Madison County in 1865.
Lewis was a smart boy who intended to stay in school, but dropped out after the sixth grade because his family needed his support financially.
Lewis and his family moved to Jacksonville in 1880, where he received a job as a water boy at a sawmill in East Jacksonville.

Although his initial position did not seem promising, Lewis rapidly advanced because of his intelligence and leadership abilities. He was quickly promoted and became a foreman, making him the highest paid black person at the mill.

Lincoln Lewis is an Australian actor who began acting at thirteen, appearing in shows like The Sleepover Club, Mortified and H2o before making his way to the big screens in 2005 with films Aquamarine and Voodoo Lagoon. However, it wasn't until appearing on Home and Away in 2007 that he became a household name, winning a Logie for his role as Geoff Campbell, lasting 567 episodes until leaving to star in the largely popular film adaptation of Tomorrow, When the War Began - Released worldwide in 2010.

Lewis (1865–1947) was an influential American businessman and philanthropist who founded the Afro-American Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville, Florida and became the state's first African-American millionaire. He also founded American Beach, a prestigious vacation spot for African Americans during the period of racial segregation.

Named after President Abraham Lincoln, A.L. was born March 29, 1865 in Madison County, Florida, only months after the president issued the Emancipation Proclamation.[1][2] Although he was known to be bright and a "voracious reader," Lewis, whose formerly enslaved father was a blacksmith, dropped out of school in the sixth grade in order to contribute to the family income.[1][3][4] After the family moved to Jacksonville in 1880, Lewis began working as a water boy at a saw mill where, over time, he was promoted to foreman and became the highest paid Black person at the mill.[1] He used savings from this
