Interview with Mark Seliger

Mark Seliger is one of the best-known editorial portrait photographers in the U.S., for over thirty years. He succeeded Annie Leibovitz as the designated “chief photographer” for Rolling Stone Magazine and has photographed over 125 Rolling Stone covers. His magazine work in portrait and fashion continues to be extensive and includes: Italian Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, GQ, and others. He has won many of the top photo awards worldwide, and continues to create self-realized projects and endeavors. I had the opportunity to talk to Mark about his most recent personal project On Christopher Street: Portraits, which is being exhibited at the Von Lintel Gallery in Los Angeles.

 

 

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Amarillo and raised in Houston, and spent my high school years there. Later, I went to East Texas University and majored in photography and minored in graphic arts. After that I moved to New York to assist and ended up staying here.

MARK SELIGER WAS BORN IN AMARILLO, TEXAS IN 1959, WHERE HE LIVED WITH HIS PARENTS, MAURICE AND CAROL LEE, AND HIS TWO OLDER BROTHERS AND YOUNGER SISTER, UNTIL 1964, WHEN THEY MOVED TO HOUSTON.

SELIGER’S EARLY INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY BEGAN WHEN HIS BROTHER FRANK PROMISED TO GIVE HIM HIS DIANA CAMERA IF HE GOT A BASE HIT IN LITTLE LEAGUE. HE DIDN’T GET THE HIT, BUT HE GOT ON BASE (BY GETTING A WALK FOR GETTING HIT IN THE SHOULDER WITH THE BALL), AND THE CAMERA WAS HIS. HIS FIRST LOVE QUICKLY BECAME THE DARKROOM WHERE HE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH PRINTING AND DEVELOPING IN THE FAMILY’S BATHROOM.

HE ATTENDED HOUSTON’S HIGH SCHOOL FOR PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS AND, FROM THERE, WENT ON TO ATTEND EAST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE HIS EDUCATION BEGAN IN EARNEST, AS HE STUDIED THE HISTORY OF DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY.

HE MOVED TO NEW YORK CITY IN 1984.

IN 1987, HE BEGAN SHOOTING SMALL ASSIGNMENTS FOR ROLLING STONE. HE WAS SIGNED AS THEIR CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER IN 1992. DURING HIS TIME AT ROLLING STONE, SELIGER SHOT OVER 125 COVERS AND BEGAN A LONG TE

Mark Alan Seliger (born May 23, 1959) is an American photographer noted for his portraiture. Seliger was born in Amarillo, Texas, the son of Maurice and Carol Lee. The family moved to Houston in 1964. He attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, and East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University Commerce). He moved to New York City in 1984.

Seliger began working for Rolling Stonein 1987, and served as its chief photographer from 1992 to 2002, and shot more than 100 covers for the magazine. As of 2010, Seliger lives in New York City and works for Conde Nast Publications. He has shot a number of covers for GQand Vanity Fair.

Seliger has also published several books; created a number of CD covers for Burning Spear, Diana Krall, and other bands; and directed short films. The celebrities whose portraits Seliger has made include Susan Sarandon, David Byrne, Matthew Barney, Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain, Lenny Kravitz, Rob Thomas, Brand Nubian, and Tony Bennett.
