Richard Plepler

Richard Plepler is the former chairman and CEO of Home Box Office, Inc., a position in which he was responsible for the overall management of the world’s most successful pay TV service, which provides the two television networks – HBO and Cinemax – to over 127 million subscribers worldwide. He was named to this position in January 2013, ultimately leaving HBO in February of 2019.

Under his leadership, HBO's original productions raised the bar with some of the most innovative, honored and critically respected programming on television, such as "True Detective" and "Game of Thrones."

As co-president from 2007 to 2012, Plepler, in partnership with Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, greenlit some of HBO’s most acclaimed and successful series including "True Blood," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Newsroom," and "Game of Thrones," which rank among the top programs in the network’s history. Plepler and Lombardo also shepherded Cinemax's first foray into primetime originals with the popular action series "Strike Back."

Richard Plepler (born 1958)[1] is an American media executive, who is said to have ushered in the second golden age of television,[2] and former chairman and chief executive officer of Home Box Office, Inc. (HBO) a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc,[3] and AT&T's WarnerMedia.[4][5] After 28 years, on February 28, 2019, it was announced that Plepler was leaving HBO, eight months after the AT&T Time Warner merger.[6][7][8]

In 2020, Plepler launched EDEN Productions and announced a five-year production deal with Apple TV+ to make television series, documentaries, and feature films.[9][10]

Andrew D. Plepler was formerly Bank of America’s Global Head of ESG. In this role, Plepler spearheaded the company’s focus on environmental, social and governance factors. He engaged with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including the company’s executive management committee, investors, consumer advocates and community leaders, to help inform and shape the bank’s strategies, policies, practices and programs. Plepler chaired the bank’s National Community Advisory Council, which for more than ten years has brought together public and private sector leaders to provide external perspective and advise the bank on responsible business practices. Prior to joining Bank of America, Plepler served as senior vice president of Housing and Community Initiatives with the Fannie Mae Foundation. Plepler previously served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Tax Division and on Capitol Hill as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
