Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain, called “Tony” by friends and colleagues, was born June 25, 1956, in New York City. The eldest son of Pierre Bourdain, an executive for Columbia Records, and Gladys Bourdain, a staff editor for the New York Times, Tony spent most of his childhood in Leonia, New Jersey.
Bourdain said he was raised without religion, but that his family was Catholic on his father’s side and Jewish on his mother’s side. His paternal grandparents were French: his paternal grandfather emigrated from Arcachon to New York following World War I, and his father grew up speaking French and spent many summers in France.
Early Career
He graduated from the Dwight-Englewood School – an independent coeducational college-preparatory day school in Englewood, New Jersey – in 1973, then enrolled at Vassar College but dropped out after two years. He worked in seafood restaurants in Provincetown, Massachusetts while attending Vassar, which inspired his decision to pursue cooking as a career.

Anthony Michael Bourdain (bor-DAYN; June 25, 1956 – June 8, 2018) was an American celebrity chef, author, and travel documentarian.[1][2][3] He starred in programs focusing on the exploration of international culture, cuisine, and the human condition.[4]
Bourdain was a 1978 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a veteran of many professional kitchens during his career, which included several years spent as an executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan. In the late 1990s Bourdain wrote an essay about the ugly secrets of a Manhattan restaurant, but he was having difficulty getting it published. According to the New York Times, his mother Gladys—then an editor and writer at the paper—handed her son's essay to friend and fellow editor Esther B. Fein, the wife of David Remnick, editor of the magazine The New Yorker.[5][6][7] Remnick ran Bourdain's essay[8] in the magazine, kickstarting Bourdain's career and

Bourdain, Anthony (25 June 1956–8 June 2018), chef, author, and television personality, was born in New York City, the eldest of two sons of Pierre Bourdain, whose father had immigrated from France, and Gladys Bourdain (née Sacksman), who grew up in a middle-class Jewish American family in the Bronx. Pierre managed a record store before working as an executive for the London and Columbia classical music labels. Gladys was a copyeditor at the New York Times. Anthony grew up in suburban Leonia, New Jersey, where he initially attended public school.
