Lisa Kereszi explores the world of recreation and escapism, viewing with a critical eye the sites she has photographed for over 20 years, such as amusement parks, movie theaters, dive bars, strip clubs, and arcades. Inspired by environments that transport us into a fantasy realm, Kereszi strips away the thinly veiled façade to reveal a far more gritty and pedestrian view of these spaces.

In Fun and Games, Kereszi focuses on the banal details within venues of cheap popular entertainment, such as the base of a stripper pole, the steps up to a theater, and golden stage curtains. Removed from their larger context, these closely cropped images hone in on the low-cost materials and crude construction of these environments, forcing us to consider how little is required to create a fantasy world that people will believe.

Lisa Kereszi received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bard College in 1995. After moving to New York City she worked as an assistant to Nan Goldin before returning to graduate school at Yale University’s School of Art, where she earned her M.F.A She has subsequently taught at the International Center of Photography and School of Visual Arts and has also been a visiting artist and critic at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Massachusetts College of Art; and Vassar College. She is currently on faculty at Yale as a Lecturer and Acting Director of Undergraduate Studies in Photography.

Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Aldrich Museum, the Bronx Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Berkeley Art Museum, among many other museums and galleries. Her photographs are also included in many

Lisa Kereszi was born in 1973 in Pennsylvania and grew up outside Philadelphia to a father who ran the family auto junkyard and to a mother who owned an antique shop. In 1995 she graduated from Bard College with a Bachelor of Arts, finally settling on a concentration in Photography after double-majoring in that and in Literature/Creative Writing.

After college she moved to New York City and worked as an assistant to Nan Goldin. In 2000 she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale University School of Art. She has been on the faculty there as a Lecturer since 2004, and also served as Acting Director of Undergraduate Studies in Photography. She was appointed Critic and also the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Art in 2013 (and served as DUS until 2023), Senior Critic in 2019, and Assistant Director of Graduate Studies in Photography in 2023. She also is a guest critic at the Hartford Art School, and has been a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow at the MacDowell Colony.
