Kojo Griffin
1971–

Kojo Griffin (born 1971 in Farmville, VA), is an American visual artist. He has had solo exhibitions in the US, including Two with the New York gallery Mitchell-Innes & Nash.

He has displayed his work extensively in group shows in the United States and in other parts of the world. Griffin has been invited to universities as a visiting artist. Some of these universities are; The Massachusetts College of Art & Design, University of Illinois at Chicago, SUNY-New Paltz, etc.

Griffin's work was described as "art that engages people in a personal (internal) dialogue". He usually features fantastic creatures in his artworks.

Griffin's artworks have been shown at the 2000 Whitney Biennial and the 2003 Corcoran Gallery of Art Biennial. His art is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Brooklyn Museum, and has appeared in Art in America and The New York Times.

Kojo Griffin (born 1971) paints psychologically charged images of a cast of anthropomorphized fairy-tale and stuffed animals. Colorfully painted on wood panels and paper, his ambiguous narratives depict the animals in seemingly violent domestic and street scenes. Because they are set free floating on fields of geometric designs or cabala, I Ching, or science-inspired symbols, Griffin’s dark tales seem to be determined by unseen systems or ways of the universe. In his newer work whether the animals are harming or helping each other is often unclear, prompting the viewer to confront her/his own narrative interpretive tendencies.

Griffin has had recent solo exhibitions at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, NY; the Tubman African American Museum, Macon, GA; and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC. His group shows include Freestyle, Studio Museum, New York (2001); and 2000 Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
