Lester Joseph Gillis -- better known to the public and press of the 1930s as Baby Face Nelson -- was one of a succession of public enemies beginning with John Dillinger and progressing to Bonnie and Clyde, Ma Barker, Machine Gun Kelly, and Pretty Boy Floyd. For decades their stories were largely myths, containing a combination of popular folklore and carefuly crafted FBI fables.

In recent years historians have generated a more factual look at the life and times of the various Depression-era desperados. Until now Baby Face Nelson has remained as enigmatic and one-dimensional as he was then, portrayed by J. Edgar Hoover and newsmen as a trigger-happy punk who looked like a choirboy and killed without a conscience. Finally the full story of his short life can be told.

Lester Joseph Gillis, aka "Baby Face Nelson", began his crime career at an early age in a street gang in the Chicago slums. He was given the nickname "Baby Face" by his gang members because he looked much younger than he actually was (14). His specialties were car theft, bootlegging and armed robbery. He spent several years in prison on auto theft and bank robbery charges. In 1932, while being returned to prison from a trial for another bank robbery, he escaped custody and fled to California, where he hooked up with a bootlegging gang. Nelson traveled among California, Indiana and Minnesota, becoming involved in several murders.

In 1934 he returned to the Chicago area, where he hooked up with a gang led by the infamous John Dillinger. Later that year the FBI learned that Nelson, his wife and other members of the Dillinger gang were staying at a resort lodge in northern Wisconsin. Lester Joseph Gillis (December 6, 1908 – November 27, 1934),^[1] also known as George Nelson and Baby Face Nelson, was an American bank robber who became a criminal partner of John Dillinger when he helped Dillinger escape from prison in Crown Point, Indiana. Later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that Nelson and the remaining gang of bank robbers were collectively "Public Enemy Number One".
