Schultz, David Lesky (“Dave”)

(b, 6 June 1959 in Palo Alto, California; d. 26 January 1996 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania), Olympic and collegiate wrestling champion, and worldwide “ambassador” for the sport.

Schultz was one of four children of Philip Gary, a counselor, and Jean St. Germain, a costume designer. As a first grader, he had trouble reading and was not up to the level of other students. Yet, as his father recalled, while the other youngsters were reading their first primers, David was singing “Greensleaves,” the old English folk song, “at the top of his lungs.” Amazingly, the bright six-year-old knew all of the words to the English air.

Larger than most children his age, Schultz compensated for his learning difficulties (later diagnosed as dyslexia) by being tough and intimidating his fellow grade-school pupils. When his contemporaries caught up to him physically, he took up wrestling as a way of maintaining his domination.

David Schultz (born June 1, 1955) is an American retired professional wrestler. Nicknamed "Dr. D", he competed in North American regional promotions Stampede Wrestling, the National Wrestling Alliance, and the American Wrestling Association in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During his short stint in the World Wrestling Federation in 1984, he gained notoriety by assaulting 20/20 reporter John Stossel during a report on the legitimacy of professional wrestling.[4]

Trained by Herb Welch, Schultz began wrestling in NWA Mid-America during the mid-1970s eventually teaming with Roger Kirby to defeat Bill Dundee and Big Bad John for the NWA Mid-America Tag Team Championship in May 1976. David Lesley Schultz (June 6, 1959 – January 26, 1996) was an American Olympic and World champion freestyle wrestler, and a seven-time World and Olympic medalist. He coached individuals and teams at the college level and also privately.

Dave and his brother, wrestler Mark Schultz, both won gold at the same Olympics (1984). The Schultzes were one of three sets of brothers (the others are Buvaisar and Adam Saitiev, and Anatoli and Sergei Beloglazov) to win both World and Olympic championships. The Schultz brothers have won more NCAA, World, and Olympic titles than any other American brother combination in history.

Schultz was employed as a coach by John du Pont, a multimillionaire philanthropist who sponsored the private Foxcatcher wrestling team at an amateur sports center known as Foxcatcher Farm that he set up on his estate in Pennsylvania. In January 1996
