Devyani Khobragade
Indian central civil servant
Devyani Khobragade is a central civil servant of Indian Foreign Service cadre. She was in the news after being charged with visa fraud when she was posted in the Indian Consul in New York City in the United States. She is currently serving as ambassador of India to Cambodia at Embassy of India, Phnom Penh.[2]
Early life
Khobragade was born May 25, 1974 in Tarapur, Maharashtra, in a Buddhist family from Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.[3][4] Khobragade's father, Uttam Khobragade, was an officer in the Indian Administrative Service.[3] He was also implicated in a number of corruption scandals.[5][6][7]
She attended Mount Carmel High School in Mumbai. She obtained a degree in medicine from King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College.[8]

The solution to the week-long spat is almost at hand with US agreeing to India shifting her to its Permanent UN Mission in New York (from the Indian Consulate where she is currently the deputy), which will give her full diplomatic immunity from prosecution as long as she is there.Although Washington has said the immunity will not be retroactive and charges against her will remain in the books, it is understood that she will not be prosecuted for the length of time she is accredited to UN.
Criminal jurisdiction will kick in the moment she is divested of this immunity.
Technically, the diplomat could be asked by India to serve at the UN till retirement, but obviously, the political solution to end the stand off involves

Who is Devyani Khobragade?
Devyani Khobragade is the daughter of retired IAS officer Uttam Khobragade. She was born and brought up in Mumbai and went to Mount Carmel School. After school, she pursued a MBBS degree from Seth GS medical college and KEM hospital in Mumbai. However, instead of following medicine as a profession, Devyani opted for foreign service. After clearing the prestigious civil services exam in 1999, Devyani was sent to various prestigious missions of India around the world including the ones in Pakistan, Italy and Germany and finally the Consulate General of India in New York. Devyani's uncle, Dr Ajay M Gondane is also an IFS officer of the 1985 batch.
