Military unit

NILI (Hebrew: נִילי) was a Jewishespionage network which assisted the United Kingdom in its fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem between 1915 and 1917, during World War I. NILI was centered in Zikhron Ya'akov, with branches in Hadera and other Moshava.[1] Nili is an acronym which stands for the Hebrew phrase: "Netzah Yisrael Lo Yeshaker" (1 Samuel 15:29), which translates as "the Eternal One of Israel will not lie".[2] The British government code-named NILI the "A Organization", according to a 1920 misfiled memorandum in the British National Archives, as described in the book "Spies in Palestine" by James Srodes.[3]

In choosing to side with the British Empire, the members of Nili went against the majority view of their fellow Jews from the Yishuv. Thus, during the Armenian genocide, the group opposed the Yishuv leadership at the time, and tried to intervene on behalf of the Armenians.[4]

The Story of a Hostage: Nili Margalit

On Thursday, November 30th, 2023, on the final day of the first ceasefire, 8 hostages were returned to Israel. One of them, Nili Margalit, is a 41-year-old nurse who had been kidnapped from her home in Nir Oz and held for 54 days in captivity. While captive in the Hamas tunnels under Gaza, she used her medical experience as a nurse to treat her fellow hostages. On January 4th, 2024, she was interviewed on “Uvda,” Israel’s equivalent of 60 Minutes. The following is an abridged translation of the interview by Rabbi Aron White.

Interviewer and producer of the televised interview: Ben Shani. TV Credits: Keshet 12.

How did you wake up on October 7th?

My dog Netchi walked into my room – whenever he wakes up early, it’s not a good sign. A few seconds later, there was the first siren.

Who kidnapped you?

Civilians. After Hamas broke into Nir Oz and started murdering and kidnapping, many Gazan civilians followed after them, plundering the kibbutz. They broke down the door to my house, and I saw a 17-year-old taking three whipped creams
