American Gladiators was certainly tough for the contestants, those brave souls who faced off against bodybuilders and athletes in challenges of physical strength and endurance. But the ‘90s-era syndicated hit was hell on the gladiators themselves, judging from the sound of two upcoming docuseries about the show.
First up is the two-part 30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary, in which the show’s cast and crew “look back on it all, with their memories complicated by regret over what it did to many of the gladiators’ lives,” according to ESPN.
Then comes the five-episode Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators, which “chronicles the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and gripping behind-the-scenes stories” of the show and “reveals untold stories of the iconic American Gladiators’ triumph, turmoil, and ultimate price of fame,” Netflix teases.

American Gladiators captivated audiences across the US as everyday heroes went up against muscle-bound marvels.
The show, which ran from 1989 to 1997, saw the cast catapulted into the limelight to become household names during their time on screen.
But what happened to the Gladiators themselves once the show went off air once and for all?
Many of the fan favorites went from strength-to-strength, carving out names for themselves in the TV and film industries or pursuing successful careers beyond the media world.

Originally from Fallbrook, California, Turbo was always on a quest for speed and power. A stand-out athlete in high school, Turbo turned down no less than 12 major scholarship offers for football and wrestling. He was discovered by a talent scout at a bodybuilding competition in Los Angeles during 1989 who was looking for new, engaging, well built athletes to try out for American Gladiators.
Although he had never seen the show, he dominated his Gladiator tryout and soon became Turbo immediately quitting his job running a concrete company. As the name implies, this Gladiator lends power, speed and agility to the squad. Competitive by nature, Turbo excelled in most events. Often referred to as the "best athlete on the team", he was definitely a formidable opponent in all Gladiator events. Turbo's strongest events were the mid-air events: Skytrack, The Wall, Hang Tough and Swingshot. However, Turbo's ground attack was just as ferocious and had very strong winning records in all events, including a near perfect Whiplash record.
