Meet Ann Makosinski
Growing Up
Ann has always had an interest in creating things. From an early age, she says she used to take her hot glue gun and stick things together, “I’d take garbage and I’d glue them together and create inventions”.
Ann’s Invention
Her project objective was to create a flashlight that ran solely off the heat of the hand, this makes the torch useable in countries where access to electricity is harder to come by.
Ann realised that Peltier tiles have the ability to capture and convert body heat. These Ann realized that if she used these tiles on the outside of the torch and left the inside hollow, this would create energy for her flashlight. The power created by the tiles was enough to power an LED light for over 20 minutes at a time, making it perfect for emergency situations.
Ann went on to win the aged 15-16 category of the 2013 Google Science Fair.

Ann Makosinski is an inventor and entrepreneur internationally recognized for her innovations in sustainable technology from an early age. Of Filipino and Polish descent, Ann showed an early interest in science and invention. Her passion for engineering and creativity was evident as a child, when she spent hours in her home laboratory experimenting with various projects.
Worldwide recognition came when Ann was only 15 years old, when she invented the "Hollow Flashlight", a flashlight that works with the heat of the human body. This innovation earned her first prize at the 2013 Google Science Fair. The flashlight uses thermoelectric effect technology, converting the heat of the hand into electrical energy to generate light, making it especially useful in areas without reliable access to electricity.

Ann Makosinski is a Canadian inventor and public speaker. She is known for her invention of the thermoelectric flashlight in 2011.
Early life and education
Makosinski is of Filipino and Polish descent.[1] Makosinski's family lives in Saanich, British Columbia.[2] Her father is a retired lab manager with two medical patents.[3] From a young age, she became fond of tinkering with different trinkets that she found around the house. One of her first toys was a box of transistors. She started soldering circuits by the age of 9. In sixth grade, Ann began competing in science fairs.[4]
For her grade 7 science project, Makosinski invented a radio powered by the wasted heat from a candle. Two years later, she built a piezoelectricflashlight of her own design.[5]
At 15, Makosinski decided to invent a light source that would not require any batteries and could be charged using the heat from the user's hand. In the end, she came up with the Hollow Flashlight,[
