SANTA ANA – There was no flag draped over the coffin, no lengthy procession and no honor guard for a man suspected of killing six people who was buried Sunday morning.
For the man who court documents say confessed to a two-month killing spree that left six people dead, the stain of the slayings seemed to pursue him even after death.
Itzcoatl Ocampo, discharged as a Marine in 2010, was not buried in a military cemetery as his family has once hoped. Instead, a small procession of family members in a Santa Ana cemetery Sunday morning marked the burial of Ocampo, a man charged as a serial killer and found dead in his jail cell before he could face a jury. Accused Serial Killer Ocampo Dies Before Trial
A former US Marine charged in a serial thrill-kill spree that left six people dead in California has died in hospital before his trial.
Itzcoatl "Izzy" Ocampo, 25, fell ill in his single-man cell on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on the following day.
No cause of death was given, and officials said an autopsy would be performed in the coming days.
Ocampo had been scheduled to appear in court in January for a pre-trial hearing.
Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty against him.
Ocampo, a native of Mexico, was facing murder charges in the deaths of a school friend's mother and brother in October 2011.
He was also accused of stabbing four homeless men in late 2011 and early 2012, in what authorities described as a serial thrill-kill rampage.
He targeted his homeless victims because they were vulnerable and because he felt they were a blight to the community, authorities said.
Ocampo was discharged from the Marine Corps in 2010.
He told investigators he planned to kill 16 peopl
