Before Starring Alongside Andy Griffith, Don Knotts Served In the US Army Special Services
Before Don Knotts became a household name for his roles on television and film, he scored some of his first comedy gigs serving in the US Army. His earliest work included a partner – a dummy named Danny – but he’d eventually go solo following World War II. Knotts then established a shining acting career, one that would cement his legacy in Hollywood history.
Don Knotts had a difficult childhood
Jesse Donald Knotts was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on July 21, 1924, as the youngest of four sons. His father, William, was a farmer who suffered from schizophrenia and alcoholism, causing him to experience extreme fits of rage and anger, which he often took out on his children. The term "national treasure" might get tossed around a lot, but if there's anyone that it actually, honest-to-gosh should be applied to, it's Don Knotts.
The Andy Griffith Show remains a quintessential piece of Americana: It's a throwback to different times, when everyone in town knew everyone else, when neighbors were more than willing to lend a hand when and where help was needed, and when police work could be done by a very excited man who could carry a gun ... as long as he kept his one bullet safely tucked away in his pocket.

Don Knotts Biography
Name at birth: Jesse Donald Knotts
Pop-eyed and pencil-necked, Don Knotts made a career out of playing jittery underdogs with wavering voices and big dreams. Knotts was a regular on the original Tonight Show with Steve Allen, where he broke in an ongoing routine called simply the Nervous Man. He then won a remarkable five Emmy Awards as Barney Fife, the bumbling deputy sheriff of Mayberry on the hit sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. Knotts seemed always on the verge of a nervous breakdown in a string of movies with titles like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966), The Reluctant Astronaut (1967), The Shakiest Gun In the West (1968) and Hot Lead and Cold Feet (1978). He hosted his own short-lived variety show, The Don Knotts Show (which featured a pre-M*A*S*HGary Burghoff), from 1970-71. Knotts gathered a second generation of fans when he played the wannabe-swinger Ralph Furley on Three’s Company from 1979-84.
