American costume designer and stylist
June Ambrose (born 5 June 1971) is an Antiguan-born American stylist, costume designer, author, creative director, influencer, and TV host. She is currently the creative director of women's basketball for Puma. Ambrose is best known for styling prominent hip hop and rhythm and blues artists in high fashion pieces and was one of the first designers to do so, most notably for artists such as Missy Elliott and Jay-Z in popular 1990s music videos. Ambrose was born in Antigua in 1971 and grew up in The Bronx. She attended Talent Unlimited High School and after graduation worked for a brief period in investment banking before interning at MCA Records where she began styling new artists. Ambrose has designed for over 200 music videos and was the costume designer for the 1998 film Belly and a stylist on The X Factor. She published her book, Effortless Style, in 2006 and in 2012 hosted her own reality television show on VH1. On a recent morning in midtown New York City, June Ambrose is sitting in the clouds when she jokes about feeling like the Wizard of Oz. We’re up in the Centurion Lounge, staring out at a hazy urban panorama from somewhere around 55 stories above rain-soaked streets, but Ambrose is speaking even more metaphorically.
For nearly 30 years, she’s been something of a music industry secret weapon — if there’s a music video that immediately comes to mind as “iconic,” odds are Ambrose designed for the artist. Her credits are staggering, her influence palpable in some of hip-hop and R&B’s most memorable style moments: Missy Elliott’s inflatable suit in the video for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” Jay-Z’s crisp linen look in “Feelin’ It.” Busta Rhymes’ Carnival-inspired aesthetic in “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could Se

What is your ideal office?
I like a quiet space where I can do research and read books. It's almost like a fashion library. What words make your heart beat faster? Art. When something stylistic turns into a work of art. It’s so thrilling to see someone in your work. Art being imitated in life – it’s the most exciting thing.
What was the last thing you saved on Instagram?
A location in Marrakech – new inspo, the colors, it’s gorgeous.
When was the last time you were truly scared?
The PUMA FUTROGRADE fashion show! It was more of an anticipatory feeling, but it was a big moment and I wanted it to be impactful on so many levels. Change is always scary, so taking on this role, and having this as somewhat of a culmination moment, was huge.
Do you have any rituals?
Of course! I’m big on bath time. I love to wind down to retro music and wake up to a gospel song. I practice 15 minutes of meditation each morning, too. I prep my day in my head and gather my thoughts – I know what I want to be, and what I want to convey
